Chatterbots is an interactive art installation that allows visitors to engage in real-time conversations with three distinct groups of AI chatbots. It takes place in a 360-degree LED visualization environment, displaying a cloud of swirling letters that represent the unique personalities of each chatbot. The comic-book style AI generated real-time graphics respond to the ongoing dialogues, offering a visually dynamic experience that highlights the interaction between humans and aesthetically configured AI avatars. The individuation of each of the seven chatterbot avatars is articulated by differences in the font style and font ‘skin’ colour of their respective letter clouds, and by the gender differentiated and multi-national accents of their English-speaking voices.

The interaction paradigm eenables visitors to navigate and interact with the chatbots using spatially tracked iPhones. As visitors move closer to the chatbots, the volume of conversation increases, enhancing the sense of proximity. A simple tap on the screen integrates the user’s voice into the ongoing dialogue, creating a seamless participatory experience.

The real-time software application is embedded within a multi-dimensional system with intelligent agents that supports incremental knowledge acquisition, allowing the artwork's narratives and AI-generated visuals to evolve gradually in response to user interactions. As participants engage with chatbot groups and contribute to ongoing conversations, the intelligent agents process their input in real time, dynamically adjusting both the dialogue and the visuals floating above. This evolving interaction mirrors an ecological systems framework, where the semantic and aesthetic coherence of the artwork emerges naturally over time, fostering a fluid and dynamic relationship between the artificial systems and human participants within the immersive, creative environment.
